What We Do

MedAutonomic is developing the Phoenix, a Brain NeuroModulator, that is at the forefront of bioelectric medicines.

The BNM produces a balance of the parasympathetic / sympathetic tone in the Autonomic Nervous System, leading to a improvement in health

Our goal is to improve the quality of life for people with functional diseases.

At the Center of our MedAutonomic is Dr. Valerio Cigaina. Dr. Cigaina invented and commercialized the gastric pacemaker, a device that helped people control their eating. The pacemaker was sold to Medtronic in 2005.

Based on years of research, Dr. Cigaina determined that the pacemaker worked by correcting an imbalance in the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), and that diseases such as type-2 diabetes, hypertension and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) were related to this imbalance. Through data on hundreds of patients, he was able to determine the signal that was sent to the brain to correct the imbalance.

MedAutonomic is developing a brain neuromodulator, i.e a "bioelectric medicine", that is implanted in the stomach wall with an gastric endoscope, so no surgery is required. We have also developed a technology that sends the correct signal to the brain without the need of a battery.

We have successfully done a number of implants of the device on swine and have perfected the implantation procedure. The non-battery power generation is being used to send the correct signal to brain, and the initial results as measured by heart rate variability indicate that the autonomic imbalance is being corrected.
